Retrievers learn through repetition. New skills are taught in a fair, clear and chronological manner. They are then sharpened through PRACTICE! With Practice, we create HABITS. We are looking for a CONDITIONED response......an action without thought. The dog performs a command reliably because it becomes "who he is", not because he has had heavy handed pressure to do so. My approach to training is not that of a taskmaster, but rather that of a coach. I'm looking to build a relationship with the dog, built on trust and fairness. This creates a dynamic dog that is a joy to watch.......a dog that loves all aspects of his work, and will perform in a variety of settings from the duck blind, to the highest levels of competiton!
The modern e-collar is the single most important piece of technology to be developed for retriever training. Once a command has been taught, practiced and conditioned to a point that the dog completely understands what is required, the e-collar is used to "reinforce" the command. The low level "nick" becomes an electronic signal between handler and dog. From reinforcing the "SIT" command while a flock of mallards makes their final pass, to communicating what is desired on a 300 yard water blind.....the e-collar provides a humane, and highly effective means of communicating with your dog.
All Clients will receive clear, concise instruction on the use and specific applications of the e-collar on their retriever. If you have any questions about the use of the e-collar in my training program, I would be glad to discuss them with you.
